Individuals with specific learning needs can improve their critical thinking and judgment about relationships and sexuality through the vehicle of therapeutic groups. This module offers an experiential, clinical and conceptual framework designed to enhance practice in the therapeutic group modality. Participants will acquire specific techniques for facilitating groups that will produce a beneficial outcome for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

- specific strategies to improve group structure and process
- differentiation of social skills training from an interactive-behavioral model
- recognizing therapeutic factors as they occur
- techniques of sociodrama
- the process of cognitive restructuring
- recognizing resistance and defense mechanisms
- helpful responses to problems in group interaction
- special considerations for the treatment of offense behavior
- transference, counter-transference and ethical cautions
- facilitator self-evaluation
