Professional Development Seminar:

This seminar offers a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to the expression of sexuality of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  A model is provided that will support the safety and quality of life of program participants, while also safeguarding the integrity of the service provider. 

Topics covered include:

  • rights and responsibilities of program participants and their service providers
  • issues of policy and consent in relation to the sexual expression of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities
  • enhancing interpersonal skill development through the therapeutic group modality
  • components of a multi-modality approach to sexuality education
  • assessing consent to sexual expression
  • discussion of problematic and deviant sexual behaviors
  • teaching sexual abuse avoidance
  • effective teaching strategies for use by direct care staff
